The Oil for Development (OID) Project targets to 'Limit Negative Impacts of Oil and Gas Development on Nature and People in Tanzania for the period of 3 years from 2016- 2018. Overall development goal for this project is to ensure that, petroleum resources exploited in Tanzania, maintain the integrity for affected ecosystems, and products and services provided by these ecosystems, particularly to the vulnerable and the poor, maintain their value, while petroleum revenues support a transition to sustainable renewable energy. The project officer will support Oil for
Development (OID) Policy and Governance Programmes towards overall implementation of the WWF TCO Energy and Extractives programmes and/or projects.
Renewable Energy Project Officer
The major function of the position is to support the Programme Coordinator in the implementation of the WWF TCO Energy and Extractives programmes and/or projects.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Promotes the Vision 2050 Energy report for Tanzania (based on WWF International Energy Report) which will be used as a basis for advocacy to enable the review and development of national, district local government policy and legal instruments for low-carbon energy development; Promotes and supports the ESARPO energy strategy so as to ensure priority landscapes and flagship species are not negatively impacted by energy development, while ensuring that access to sustainable energy services is expanded in line with a projection to meet a 100% energy access target for Tanzania by 2017; Implements of WWF TCO's energy and biofuel projects and prepare necessary technical activity and project specific reports; In Collaboration with the Communication Manager develops and disseminates appropriate communication materials (posters, newsletters, factsheets etc) on key issues associated with energy development and climate change initiatives in Tanzania; Participates in the WWF network's development of a larger international initiative associated with sustainable Energy development, climate change and extractives; Coordinates the energy and climate policies, laws and institutions both state and civil society; Integrates climate change and adaptation considerations in energy developments of selected project areas (WWF priority areas); Recommends climate change interventions III energy development related to energy developments ego
Hydropower, solar, geothermal and biomass energy among others, to the Programme Coordinator; Facilitates TCO's efforts in increasing access to basic energy services in communities adjacent to model energy villages and targeted CSOs; Supports the Programme Coordinator in capacity strengthening of TCO and its partners on energy and climate issues; Support the Programme Coordinator in undertaking research and development of sustainability tools to promote improved environmental and social performance of renewable energy development particularly for hydropower and biofuels development (e.g. sustainability criteria, upstream-downstream partnerships etc).
Required Qualifications and skills:
Master's Degree in Energy and/or climate change studies, development studies, Social Sciences, Environmental Science and Natural Resource Management; At least 3 years of professional experience; Experience in sustainable energy development systems is a must; Experience in civil society organizational capacity development, lobbying, advocacy, natural resources management is a must; Highly developed conceptual, analytical and innovative problem-solving ability; Demonstrated ability to handle complex process and information integration issues; Extensive theoretical background and practical experience III organization development, civil society engagement, communication, lobbying and advocacy.
